Tributes

  1. When I first met Alan he was welcoming and very friendly straight away. He had such a relaxed way about him.
One standout thing was his obvious love and devotion to Chris. Chris would say that he was so thoughtful and looking to surprise her all the time with birthdays etc.
A hard act to follow being such an incredibly happy and positive guy. A star!
We're so sorry for your great loss, Chris.

  4. Ripper of a bloke, who I knew through the Bull n Bear days onwards and on and off the golf course and some legendary lunches.

In some ways he was the biggest man I’ve met.

His largeness of heart and spirit was something to be admired and remembered, along with his annoyingly pure golf swing.

The world was a better place with him in it.
    Rest in peace Alan.

  6. Al,
Sorry I can't make it to the funeral today, but I'll be thinking of you and the many happy times we spent together as friends and work colleagues.
Although we both grew up only five miles apart in England, we didn't meet up until we both lived and worked in Melbourne. It was worth the wait! you were great to be around and we always had
laughs together and shared our great love of all things cricket, Blackburn Rovers, music and BEER.
    RIP mate!

  9. Mr ‘Mac’ Sweeney.
What a star! Husband, son, brother, uncle & a friend to all of us.

We met at the Burnley 9 hole Practice Course -
way back - not long after he set foot on Aussie shores. Golf was his passion.

Alan’s life was amazing. Travels with Chris - the love of his life. A fun loving, cheeky lad, jokes, wise cracks & laughs - lots of laughs!
Nothing was untouchable during discussions over a beer or 3. Golf - bikes - footy somehow it always turned to laughter.
Such a brave man, handled his health issues with courage & dignity.
We will cherish our memories always.
Heartfelt condolences to Chris, Rona, Paul & Andrea & families.
Farewell our friend - Ron & Elaine

  12. I met Alan many years ago on the golf course, he was my Dads bestie whom he called Ronnie Corbet and that is how he introduced him to many people he knew.

I will never ever forget you Alan, we always visited you when in town and stayed in your many homes from Northcote, to St Leonard’s. We went to golf at Barnbougle in Tassie and had planned another trip there.

So sorry you never got to ride your new bike, Matthew has ridden his quite a lot now, I know you’ll be looking down on him.

We are really sorry for your loss Chris. Alan was a beautiful man and we will treasure all the memories we have of him for ever.

  24. Condolences to Chris and Alan's family.
We are really sad that we are in Europe and unable to attend his service.

We first met Al 37 years ago in Northcote when Chris bought home a 'friend' from work. We realised that things were getting serious when Sue spotted Al's shirt hanging behind the door. Al easily mixed in with Chris's social group and was popular from the start. His good sense of humour and easy going nature made him an instant hit. Alan was always interested in other people and never focused on himself. He was compassionate, considerate and thoughtful. His exceptional character was evident with how he handled his illness.

As we were in Liverpool today we felt honoured to be able to divert to Darwen where Alan grew up. Alan was a true friend of ours whom we will miss terribly.
